Clay’s Sara Lundberg on AI, human craft, and the power of iteration
A couple of weeks ago, we got our travelling boots out and headed to the big smoke. City of dreams, screeching underground trains, and – for us – the opportunity to speak to someone we’ve looked up to for a long time.
In what was a first for Shaped By, we sat down – live – with Sara Lundberg, Manager of Brand and Creative at Clay, to record a new episode of The Changemakers. This time, available to watch on video (lucky you!)

Clay’s rise to meteoric success can’t be overlooked. Trusted by over 500,000 leading GTM teams, their platform uses agentic AI at its core – and yet, it’s a “refreshingly imperfect” design system that they opt for. With its wobbly visual identity, and human-feel, hand-made elements, it wouldn’t be crazy to assume that Clay was a stop-motion animation agency, or at least something that by its very nature, fended off AI.
The opposite is true and it’s exactly this that makes Clay such a fascinating brand – one that continues to pique interest across markets.
The main takeaways?
Clay isn’t AI-first: Clay is fundamentally a creative brand… but, they use AI. A fair bit. Sara emphasises that AI is used to enhance craft, not replace human effort and care. The brand’s illustrated, tactile identity is testament to this.
Iteration over big-brand moments: B2B tech moves fast. Brands can’t afford to disappear for six months and relaunch; Clay’s team works in constant, small iterations and aims to produce work at least 1% better each time.

The importance of culture: Clay’s team is majority in-person, with employees working from swanky San Francisco and NYC offices that – yes – have clay dotted about for all to play with. Sara credits the quality of Clay’s output to in-person connections, the ability to strike up spontaneous chats that aren’t always about specific projects, but that have the space to get imaginative. To spark new ideas.
