When B2B got its edge back: 6 thoughts from BYOB 2024
We designed our annual BringYourOwnBold (BYOB) summit to bring insights and inspiration from people who love to think and do boldly. Why? Because we believe that’s the way for you to win in the tech world. And when we say bold we aren’t always talking bigger, brighter, brasher. It’s finding what’s authentic and unique (relatively) to you, and then communicating that in a differentiated way.
We brought some of the brightest minds in B2B together over two days and 11 sessions to share what actually works in this complex landscape.
We dug into the visceral realities of what it takes to build brands and drive serious growth in the B2B space. No fluff, no BS, just real insights from the front lines. These insights will help you reframe your approach, realign your priorities, and reimagine what’s possible when it comes to building lasting brands and driving business growth. All sessions are available on-demand here if you want to explore. But for now, here are the takeaways.

6 things we learned at BYOB 2024
1. Brand isn’t a nice to have, it’s non-negotiable
Did brand ever really go away? Or did we just stop fighting for it? There’s a clear shift happening in B2B tech – companies are waking up to brand as their underutilised weapon for a competitive edge. The results speak for themselves: deeper trust, faster sales cycles, stickier customer relationships. But here’s the reality check: you still need to fight your corner in the boardroom, armed with the language that makes CFOs sit up and listen.
2. Talk brand in the boardroom (and get heard)
A recurring theme was the importance of collaborating closely with key stakeholders like the CFO and board to demonstrate brand value through business outcomes. Speakers emphasised the need to frame brand investments through metics that resonate in the boardroom – from revenue impact to customer lifetime value. While maintaining strong creative vision, successful leaders found ways to drive brand initiatives through smart, cost-effective approaches beyond traditional ATL spend. This flexible, commercially-minded approach helped secure buy-in and build lasting C-suite partnerships.
3. Weird works (when you mean it)
Gone are the days when B2B meant boring-to-boring. Speakers tore apart the myth that business marketing must live in the land of stock photos and corporate speak. The most compelling campaigns are daring to be different – using creativity, humour, and yes, even weirdness to cut through. Especially when tackling complex topics like AI, this human touch isn’t just refreshing – it’s strategic. The non-negotiable? It has to be authentic to who you are and who you’re talking to.
4. Use AI to innovate, not just streamline
Forget using AI just to churn out content faster. The real opportunity? Using it to push creative boundaries. Speakers shared striking examples of AI elevating brand experiences in ways no one expected. The secret isn’t in random prompting – it’s in building your own playbook of proven approaches if you’re willing to put in time up front. When creative teams have this foundation, they stop thinking about AI as a shortcut and start seeing it as a springboard for fresh ideas and stronger brands.
5. Set your creatives free
A thread across sessions was the importance of setting in-house creative teams up for success. Smart organisations are arming their designers with tools and templates that let anyone create on-brand content, breaking the bottleneck of endless small requests. But this isn’t just about efficiency – it’s about unleashing your creative talent on what really matters. When designers can focus on strategic work and collaborate with agencies for fresh perspective, that’s when the magic happens. All while keeping quality high and resources smart.
6. Growth doesn’t mean losing your soul
The final thread was the delicate art of brand evolution. High-growth companies face a unique challenge: how to scale without losing what makes them special. It’s not about rigid brand guidelines – it’s about staying true to your story while finding fresh ways to tell it. The secret lies in building teams who get it at a gut level: people who can channel the founders’ vision while bringing new energy to every touchpoint. This isn’t just about protecting your brand – it’s about letting it breathe, grow, and connect across every part of the business. Quality and craft matter everywhere, not just in design.
