Censys: A strategic brand evolution
Creating a standout brand to match a standout product
Censys helps security teams spot risks before they turn into threats. Their platform scans the internet in real time, giving organisations the clearest picture of their attack surface.
As the business moved from startup to scale-up, the brand fell behind. It no longer reflected the sophistication of their product, the credibility they’d earned, or the professionalism their market expected. It was holding them back — visually, verbally, and strategically.
They had invested heavily in research and insight, but turning that thinking into a confident, distinctive brand system that works across all touchpoints? That’s where they were stuck.
They needed a partner to cut through the noise, sharpen the strategy, and make it real — fast.
Unlocking direction
Censys weren’t short on insight. But the more they uncovered, the harder it became to move forward. They were stuck in a loop of overthinking. Our first step was to bring clarity and momentum.
They came to us with:
- A backlog of research but no clear direction
- A desire to evolve without losing technical credibility
- A brand and website that were limiting growth
Our role was to make decisions. To identify what mattered, ditch what didn’t, and build a strategic foundation the creative could stretch from.

Positioning around a core strength
We centred the brand around what made Censys different: unmatched internet visibility and the clarity it brings. From that truth, we explored three creative territories to test how far the brand could stretch.
Each route was designed to carve out space in a crowded market. Getting early reactions helped us pressure-test the thinking and build momentum behind the right direction.
The breakthrough: Where meets why
The idea that unlocked everything was deceptively simple: a “map of the internet” where ‘where’ (data and visibility) meets ‘why’ (meaning and risk insight). This concept expressed both what Censys offers and why it matters.
We brought it to life as a schematic asset that made their unique capability visible and usable. It became a consistent thread across brand, product and marketing. It gave Censys a signature expression rooted in their core value — and room to evolve.

Distinctive by design
Censys wanted to keep their signature orange. But in a market flooded with blue and orange, it no longer stood out. Our competitor and category research made that clear.
So instead of throwing it out, we refined its use:
- A balanced palette – muted tones for depth, with sharper contrasts to highlight key moments
- A refined application of colour – using orange as an accent rather than the foundation
- A flexible system – adaptable across product, marketing, and sales
We refined their mark to better represent constant discovery. And introduced a bespoke digital overlay to make abstract security concepts more tangible.

Every single person who has seen this work can feel the care, the thought, and the genuine investment in the success of our team. It's impossible to not feel that in the work that you're delivering to us.

A website built to perform
Censys needed a website that worked harder for demand generation. Their website was rigid, difficult to update, and visually limiting.
We rebuilt it from the ground up, moving to Craft CMS for flexibility, control, and security.
The new site:
- Made updates easy and fast
- Created space for storytelling and conversion
- Matched the sophistication of their product

What Changed
- Company-wide adoption — from engineers to execs, the brand landed
- A site built for scale — faster to update, easier to use
- Sharper messaging — a voice rooted in clarity and credibility
- A stronger position — a distinct look, clear value, and confidence

Takeaways
- Strategy only matters if it drives execution
- A distinctive brand is a strategic tool, not a surface fix
- Strong creative partnerships don’t just deliver work, they unlock momentum
Visual credibility, and a consistent look and feel and matching the visual experience that somebody can have when they see Censys for the 1st time, and have that be at parity with the quality of the data and the true ground truth of the data and the products that we represent. It was so important for us to get it right. I am delighted, and so pleasantly surprised at the level of maturity and professionalism that the work reflects for the Censys brand.
