Palo Alto Networks: Disruptive Storytelling
Palo Alto Networks’ EMEA Network Security team wanted to level-up their ransomware awareness campaign to show they live their value of ‘disruption’. The current campaign was packed with insight, but it lacked staying power and the content felt inaccessible. They weren’t getting bang for their buck, so they were after a bold new approach. Something with a bit of oomph to build a sense of community, and to give them ownership around a critical issue.
We took their existing report and rebranded it into a distinct, ownable platform called “Ransomware Resilience.” It’s the foundation of an integrated campaign that gives them longevity, cut through, and impactful content that can be expressed in different contexts and formats.

Setting the scene
To make this campaign sing, we needed to package it up and create an environment that was evergreen. Where they could keep adding content, building a community. The idea is to let the story of Ransomware Resilience unfold. The integrated campaign wouldn’t say everything in one go, but build a narrative over time giving evergreen and up-to-date content that serves as a perpetual reason to engage resource vs a one-hit wonder.

Building a movement
First they needed a concept. We started exploring bold and brave territories and landed on the name “Ransomware Resilience.” Kudos to the internal team for giving us creative license to bring more personality to the Palo Alto Networks brand.
The concept immediately conjured thoughts on how it could be creatively expressed which we had some real fun with. Being well versed in the cybersecurity world, we get the challenges of communicating with their target audience and needed to make sure this landed.

Their audience knows what ransomware is. This concept needed to tell the Palo Alto Networks story, to give them ownability of it while cutting through and being impactful. Creatively it strikes a balance between being dark, dystopian provoking the feeling of drama and suspense, without scaring the shit out of people.

It’s a serious subject matter, and people get affected by the outcome so it has to be respectful, helping them be better informed to protect themselves from the top-decision maker down to the user that could potentially open the phishing email.

A call to action
We created a distinctive visual language – a world of glitch effects, and layered soundscapes that brings something fresh and impactful to the table. It gives memorability but is still instantly recognisable as part of the Palo Alto Networks family. We explored different mediums and formats for how the content could be delivered – and how creatively it could be represented. We’re talking about reports, mood films, webinars, events, merch, landing pages, posters.

The results
Ransomware Resilience strikes a balance of being optimistically ominous. We strive for purposeful creative communications, and the maximalist approach screams the subject matter as effectively as it can. This case study was written at the time of launch so there aren’t any comparable results to show yet – we’ll update this after a period of time. But success looks like:
- Contribution to pipeline
- Awareness and visibility - the number of eyeballs on it
- Penetration/interaction with white space accounts
I want to send a personal THANK YOU for all the work you’ve put into the disruptive Ransomware Resilience web experience! This was truly a team effort, and we couldn’t have done it without each of you.”
